Berbere is a traditional Ethiopian seasoning blend that puts peppery heat front and center finishing with a toasty warmth.  Our berbere opens with a snappy spike of heat from cayenne pepper, paprika’s smoky fruit, the burn of black pepper and fenugreek’s surprisingly bitter flavor. Heat from the chiles lingers, retained by the peppery qualities of aromatic clove and allspice, before the sweet spices like ginger and cinnamon come at the finish.  When all is said and done, the the heat from this blend isn’t so bad and leaves you wanting more!

Our berbere blend holds up well to prolonged cooking, and is versatile across all manner of meats. For recipes that call for harissa powder, you can use berbere in equivalent measures (1 tsp of harissa = 1 tsp berbere). Berbere is found in kai sega wat, a fiery beef stew, in a hearty lentil stew, misir wat, or in a slow-cooked chicken stew, doro wat. Toss cubes of meat or chicken, or cleaned shrimp, in berbere before skewering for kebabs. It’s wonderful in casseroles and goes well with cheese, so consider stirring it in to a cheesy vegetable gratin or quiche. Give potato pancakes an extra kick by stirring in Berbere, or add to a spinach and onion frittata. Season butter with Berbere and pour over popcorn for a super savory snack.
